Special Educational Needs
The Irish Education Act of 1998 first recognised and set out the right to education for every young person within the state of Ireland. This was a pivotal moment for many people in Ireland. The Education for Persons with Special Educational Needs Act followed on in 2004.
As a teacher I strive to uphold these policies and make my classroom as inclusive as possible to the needs of each and every young person. During my time on the PME I began to develop my knowledge around the variety of SEN's. Linking in with various literature and policies and resources from the National Council for Special Education assisted me in understanding the educational needs of each individual student. I will continue to develop my knowledge through CPD courses and training to gain a deeper understanding so I can become a more effective and inclusive teacher.
SEN Case Study
As part of my academic studies I conducted a small scale case study report during School Placement 1. The report was undertaken to examine and implement a variety of differentiated strategies during a printmaking Unit of Learning to support a selected student in their learning journey. The study was conducted at Junior Cycle in an all girls secondary school in county Tipperary. The selected student has been diagnosed with DSM-5 Criterion4: Mild Dyspraxia, ASD, Asperger's, Dyslexia, Anxiety and is referred to as H throughout the report.
