5th Year SP2 - Ceramic UoL

This 10 week unit of learning was developed for senior cycle students to continue on their journeys to becoming resourceful, engaged, confident, active learners. Theme of the project was identity. The starting point for this project was a trip to the Hugh Lane Art Gallery in Dublin where students explored the exhibition ‘Bones in the Attic’. Students were asked to create, respond and reflect on what they viewed, their own sense of identity, and research artists that work in the theme of identity. Students looked inwards, giving a voice to their thoughts, developing new ceramic skills and processes that culminate in a ceramic installation representing 20 students and their personal  responses to identity. Students used classroom ICT to research articles, images, and build a body of  information. Through photographs, sketchbook work , drawings and maquettes  students created a hand built (slab and coil) ceramic head that included textures, surface  decoration and additional materials (where applicable), pushing their clay work into the arena of sculpture as a response to the exhibit and identity.
